Jaguars' Liam Coen evaluates Travis Hunter's play at WR and CB vs. Steelers

Following Travis Hunter's preseason debut with the Jacksonville Jaguars, which included him seeing snaps at both wide receiver and cornerback, what did head coach Liam Coen think of his performance? "I think he made a couple good catches on some option routes," Coen said. "Missed the one tackle defensively that I noticed. Like that was the only thing I noticed about his overall play. In terms of that, I'll have to watch the tape on how he operated defensively a little bit more, but I thought offensively he made the right decisions on those option routes, made a good catch, almost broke out of that one where Trevor put it behind him on that third down we talked about. But I'll have to go watch the tape a little bit more to know more." Hunter played the first offensive possession and saw three targets on that drive--although one was negated by a penalty. He caught all three passes, two of which came on those in-breaking option routes that Coen mentioned and another was on a screen. In the stat book, Hunter finished his night on offense with two targets, two receptions, and nine yards. On defense, Hunter played the second and third possessions. The ball didn't come his way, but he did miss a tackle in the run game near the line of scrimmage. ESPN's Michael DiRocco noted that on one play, "there may have been some confusion on a coverage." When it was all said and done, Hunter was on the field for three total possessions--one on offense and two on defense--playing 18 snaps, with 10 coming on offense and eight on defense. 2025 College Football Odds: Why Wagering On Buffs' Under Is Still Best Bet

On July 27, gambling text message threads received a bombshell: Colorado head coach Deion Sanders would step down. He would do so the following morning during his scheduled press conference where he would give the public an update on his health. Sharp groups hammered the Colorado win total from 6.5 at -180ish — a hefty price — down to a consensus 5.5 games. But the information turned out to be incorrect. Coach Prime announced he had bladder cancer that required surgery and now he's cancer-free. A positive result considering the circumstances, and Sanders announced he'd still be on the sidelines for his Buffaloes this season. I wrote weeks ago that I liked Colorado under 6.5 wins as one of my favorite win total wagers of the 2025 season. Does that change now that Colorado is sitting at 5.5 wins? If you tailed me, should you buy some Over 5.5 for a middle at six wins? The Buffs return only six starters from their nine-win team last season. They lost Shedeur Sanders, their quarterback. They lost their Heisman-winning receiver and cornerback, Travis Hunter. The Buffs also lost their top four wide receivers. The CU defense improved more than 50 spots in efficiency rankings but lost a number of key pieces. It replaced all these players with more transfer portal additions, but how many times can Colorado hit a home run with portal players? It's just not a proven path to continued success in this sport. Colorado will need these portal players to win. It will need production from a new quarterback, receivers, four offensive linemen, the entire linebacker corps and multiple secondary players for a chance to succeed this season. It seems untenable for Deion & Co. to have the same success this season that they had in 2024. This is a new offense that can't be bailed out by Sanders or Hunter. It's stagnant. There's no motion. There's no variation in formations. The offense doesn't use a tight end and it doesn't run the football. Is CU going to change the offense now that Sanders is no longer the quarterback? I'm doubtful. The defense improved greatly last season, but this year, that unit will rely on its returning defensive-line depth, mixed with all new linebackers. The team just isn't as talented this season. Colorado's conference schedule in 2025 is much harder than it was in 2024. The Buffaloes faced six of the seven Big 12 teams to finish under .500 in conference play last year. They play five of the seven favorites to win the league, plus a trip to West Virginia later in the year when it's possible the Moutaineers have it together with Rich Rod. CU also hosts Georgia Tech in Week 1 and I don't believe it will win that game. I think Under 5.5 is still a play if you missed out on the 6.5. I'm not going to try to middle on six, and I'm fine with sitting on my Under 6.5. PICK: Colorado Under 6.5 wins Geoff Schwartz is an NFL analyst for FOX Sports. Davante Adams shares bold prediction on Travis Hunter's rookie season

As the start of the NFL regular season draws closer, the Jacksonville Jaguars are offering more insight into how the team plans to deploy rookie Travis Hunter. Hunter, who was a two-way star at Jackson State and Colorado, was listed as the starting wide receiver and the backup cornerback on the Jaguars' first official depth chart. As the debate about whether Hunter will take a similar number of snaps on offense and defense at the professional football level continues, Los Angeles Rams wideout Davante Adams offered his take on the rookie's prospects. Adams believes Hunter could face injury concerns if his workload involves significant snaps in the long-term on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. "I don't even think it's possible to do. Not at a high level. It's hard enough to go cover a punt and then be on one side," Adams said during a recent appearance on "The Pivot" podcast. "That's just a lot of mileage, man. I'm not even concerned so much if he can do it over the course of a game or a season. It's more like, how long is his career going to be if he's playing that many snaps? All you're doing is doubling your risk of injury." Adams made it clear that he hopes Hunter can ultimately avoid any injury, but cautioned about what the Heisman winner will encounter playing defense against NFL players. "I don't wish any of that on him. I hope he can play an injury-free season and go ball out. But this is the reality. It's already 100% injury guarantee. Once you get out there playing both sides, you gotta tackle Derrick Henry with that frame. He's athletic as hell, but he's gotta do some ninja s---." Two-way NFL players have been a rarity. Chuck Bednarik was the league's last full-time two-way athlete. Bednarik was a linebacker and offensive lineman for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1949-62. Sammy Baugh and Don Hutson are also notable former two-way stars. Baugh was a quarterback, defensive back and punter. Huston spent his entire NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, playing receiver and safety. He later had a stint as a Packers assistant coach.

Why Jaguars' depth chart reveal was great Travis Hunter fantasy news

The Jacksonville Jaguars currently find themselves in untrodden territory. The team invested quite a bit in moving up to select Travis Hunter at No. 2 in the 2025 NFL draft, and it took the reigning Heisman Trophy winner with the intent to turn him into the NFL's first regular two-way player in more than 60 years. Hunter played most snaps at both receiver and cornerback in college at Colorado, but as of now, it's not exactly clear how the Jaguars intend to use him as a rookie in 2025. However, we may have gotten a bit more clarity as the team released its first depth chart of the season amid training camp. On the depth chart, Hunter is listed as a starting receiver alongside Brian Thomas Jr. and free agent addition Dyami Brown. Meanwhile, he is listed among the second-string cornerbacks, behind starters Tyson Campbell and Jourdan Lewis. That would seemingly indicate that Hunter is going to see the bulk of his snaps on offense, at least to start, and that is certainly a boon for fantasy football managers with Hunter on their team. Hopes are high for the Jaguars' offense in 2025 as the team is now led by Liam Coen, one of the NFL's top offensive coordinators last season. With Coen, a healthy Trevor Lawrence and Thomas, who starred as a rookie last season, this could be a productive unit with Hunter poised to benefit, as well. The only major concern for fantasy managers would be that Hunter's usage on defense could siphon critical snaps away on offense and limit his fantasy production. We'll have to see how Hunter is used when the Jags take the field in preseason for the first time against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, but the team seems to be indicating that fantasy managers can rest easily and most of Hunter's early contributions will be on the offensive side of the ball. Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence on trip to Bahamas with Brian Thomas, Travis Hunter and others

Jacksonville Jaguars' quarterback Trevor Lawrence, along with wide receivers Brian Thomas Jr., Dyami Brown, Travis Hunter, and a number of other players, recently visited the Bahamas to work out together and to do some team bonding. This week, Lawrence is playing the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe, where he discussed the trip to the Bahamas. Advertisement "A big group of us went out to the Bahamas to get a little extra work, some team bonding, and to hang out a little bit too," Lawrence said. "It was a fun trip. I brought my pads to throw in, all the other guys, most receivers, they don't wear them to work out, but I like to throw in them in the offseason just to get ready for wearing them in season, obviously." As Lawrence said earlier this offseason, Liam Coen's offense gives you all the answers, but it puts a lot on the plates of the offensive players with the variety of different formations, motions, routes, and more that this scheme throws at opposing defenses. Another important component, as Lawrence has discussed, is the connection between his footwork and the timing of his progressions. Advertisement Getting as many banked reps as possible with the wide receivers and tight ends can help build chemistry and also expedite the learning curve that comes with implementing a new system. When it comes to Travis Hunter's role in this new-look Jaguars' offense, Lawrence continues to see him growing and making strides. "Travis has been great," Lawrence said. "Just his work ethic, how he's come in. He's been one of the hardest-working guys we have. I think it's commitment to learning the playbook and trying to learn the two systems. It's a lot on a rookie. It's challenging to learn everything and he's done a nice job and we still have work to do and we're gonna get a lot done in training camp and get us ready to play come September. But I'm really excited for him and how he can help our team." On Dyami Brown's YouTube page, you can find highlights from the trip.
